Alberta Camping
Alberta camping is more than just camping in Banff and sometimes Banff campgrounds are full so you have no other choice! Camping in Alberta means that you can either stay in the National Parks such as Banff, Jasper, Waterton Lakes, and so on, or take advantage of the Provincial Alberta Campgrounds. Many of the Alberta campgrounds are just as nice as the National Park campgrounds, although, of course, you will be further away from Banff. To find and reserve a campsite, click here to go to the Alberta Government's recently released reservations page. OUR RECOMMENDED ALBERTA MOUNTAIN CAMPGROUNDS
As you look through the Provincial campground reservations site above, we have a small recommendation for you on the assumption that the reason you were coming to Banff was to camp in the mountains! The best place to look for a rugged mountain adventure is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. It is located about 45 minutes from Banff (you turn south on Highway 40 from Highway 1 on your way to Banff from Calgary) and is part of a pristine mountain wilderness known as Kananaskis Country. Really, any campgrounds are good in Peter Lougheed Park, but we have a special affinity for Boulton Campground. There are some spots on Lower Kananaskis Lake as well. The only caution we have is that there are very few stores, restaurants, or other amenities in Peter Lougheed Park.
Happy Camping!
